Kevin Joshua called “Joshua Singh” and “Topo”, 22, an unemployed man of 142 Victoria Street, Cumberland, East Canje, Berbice, was described as a bully.
He was on Wednesday remanded to prison by Magistrate Adela Nagamootoo when he appeared before her at the Reliance Magistrate court and pleaded not guilty to the charge of inflicting grievously bodily harm on Harlon Rose a school boy of Cumberland East Canje.
The offence was committed on July 11, last, at Victoria Street Cumberland.
The case for the prosecution as presented by Corporal Sherlock King, was that on the day in question Rose and others were on the street looking on at a commotion that was being caused by Joshua who was beating up his family, including his parents.
Persons decided to upbraid Joshua for his actions but the latter did not take the spectators’ remarks lightly and subsequently armed himself with a bottle of acid, which he hid behind his back and came out on the street.
He reportedly threw the acid on Rose, causing the youth serious burns to his face and other parts of his body. Joshua then made good his escape. He was subsequently captured early the next day in a police ambush near his home.
Rose, in the meanwhile, was picked up and rushed to the New Amsterdam hospital in a critical condition, where he remains warded.
A bottle suspected to have contained the acid was subsequently retrieved from the scene by investigators.
Joshua’s lawyer, Rabindranauth Singh, in his plea for bail stated that the victim’s condition has improved and that he is out of danger.
However prosecutor King objected to bail on the grounds that the crime was a serious one. He stated that the accused had escaped. He also stated that the victim is still hospitalized and that his condition was still serious.
