Barbados defeat Windwards y 94 runs
Jamaica and Barbados joined host Guyana in winners’ row in the first round of the Regional under-19 three-day cricket competition which ended here yesterday.
After Guyana collected 12 points from the Leewards before Lunch, Jamaica crushed Trinidad and Tobago by 10 wickets by Tea at Everest and Barbados hammered defending champions Windward Islands by 94 runs 83 minutes after Tea at DCC.
At Everest, T&T without a title at this level since their double in 2005 in St Vincent began the final day following on in their second innings on 52-3. The lads from Carnival country had little to celebrate after they had made 136 in their first innings responding to Jamaica’s 320.
Aheal Hosein battled hard on the slow track in sunny conditions before falling two short of the competition’s first century, while Renne Davis (25) and Idress Mohamed (23) ensured that Jamaica at least had to bat a second time as T&T reached 183 all out in their second innings.
Hosein hit five fours, batted for 322 minutes and faced 209 balls before he was removed by James McDonald who finished with 3-14, while Marquino Mindley and Donavon Nelson supported with two wickets for the Jamaicans who were set 19 to win.
The in-form John Campbell (6*) who scored 55 in the first innings and Oshane Walter, who struck three boundaries in his unbeaten 12, saw Jamaica to 19-0 off just two overs.
At DCC, Barbados, led by the tournament’s lone Test player Kraigg Braithwaite, began the final day on 292-8 and were all out for 312, to register the third highest total in the first round after Jamaica’s 320 and Guyana 317-9 declared.
Wicketkeeper Mario Rampersaud carried his overnight 34 to 50 not out as Kaveem Hodge, the outstanding all-rounder in last year’s tournament in St Lucia, took 4-80.
Set 325 to win, the Windwards were dismissed for 230 with Sunil Anbris leading the way with 44 and Larry Edwards, who had a five-wicket haul in the Bajan first innings, fell for 36.
Debutant off-spinner Chaim Holder took the last seven wickets to end with 7-60 off 25.5 overs after 17-year-old West Indies all-rounder Justin Greaves had 7-40 in the Windwards first innings.
The competition continues tomorrow with Guyana playing Jamaica at Bourda, Windwards facing T&T at Providence and Barbados taking on the Leewards at DCC.
