Intense rivalries continued yesterday at the Guyana Inter-Unit Athletic Championships with the competing units locked in a close battle for supremacy at the Base Camp Ayanganna Ground at Thomas Lands on Day II of the annual competition.
Headlining the proceedings on the second day was the performance of Jamal Scott, who jumped to the top of the podium in triple jump event, upsetting Day I long jump winner, Orlon Glasgow in the process. No distances were available in the event.
However, Kaieteur Sport understands that Scott, who graduated Best Student at Standard Officer Course 43 this year, officially upstaged Coast Guard, Glasgow. Scott represented Artillery in the event. Defence Headquarters’ (DHQ), Kareem Aaron was third.
First Infantry Battalion (INF), Kim Daly won the women’s triple jump with 8.79m with Ashanti Carrington, representing Base Camp Ayanganna (BCA) second with 8.75m and DHQ, Maurees Skeete third with a distance of 8.62m in the closely contested event.
In other completed finals of the field events contest, Second Infantry Battalion’s, Devon Leitch threw 10.84m to win the male Shot Putt event with Coast Guard, Eusi Hughes second with 10.45 and BCA, Troy Lewis third with his 10.08m in his attempt.
In the female Discuss competition, Joycelyn Scott tossed the apparatus some 23.89m to win that event ahead of INF, Kim Daly (19.75m) and Donica Lyle (19.75). Daly and Lyle shared second place in the competition and will both be duly awarded.
The heats in most of the track events were completed yesterday and today was designated as the ‘rest day’ for the three-day competition.
The rivalry among the units of the Defence Force is set to continue tomorrow where the curtains come down on the event. The Inter-Unit Championships is geared at selecting the GDF team to compete against rivals, the Guyana Police Force, Guyana Fire Service and Guyana Prison Service at the Inter-Service Track and Field Championships later this year.
