Dear Editor,
I am a worried Guyanese citizen. My worries have started ever since I have seen so many of our young Guyanese boys and girls suffocating, all due to the dark atmosphere filled with sexual atrocities and ill thoughts of our fellow beings.
Many females in households today are stripped verbally, sexually and emotionally of their rights and their freedom – the freedom to live and breathe the fresh air of self-emancipation.
My letter is not about our dear Guyanese females who are being abused, but is of our young generation who are suffering because they currently also lack the ability to breathe that fresh air of emancipation.
And who are we going to blame? It is us! We, the citizens of Guyana are the ones who are suffocating our future men and women of tomorrow.
A very critical social issue that has left the world upturned and led to many changes; one of which has given countless persons of this world a chance to live with perfect freedom, is the freedom to respect everyone’s sexuality. Sexuality is not a commodity that can be bid upon in Parliament. It is not a topic for us to debate upon but it is a natural part of our lives. We are born with it. We treasure it our entire lives.
Be it a male, a female, a gay or even a lesbian, everyone respects his/her sexuality.
Then why must we question someone about his/her sexuality today? Gays around the world have been given legal rights to live. Most countries have given their citizens an equal chance to live and dwell but why not our own Guyana?
Why do countless youths have to suffer and be depressed of lacking someone of their choice to love and share their feelings with? Why are they treading the path of suicide and delinquency today? Why?
By discriminating against such persons, we are destroying the future of our country. The rate of persons becoming homosexuals is on an exponential increase. A very large fraction of Guyana’s population comprises homosexual beings, but they have to kill that natural part of themselves just to satisfy the so-called ‘straight citizens’.
Personally, I do not aspire for such satisfaction that will only hurt and destroy innocent lives. They are all my brothers and sisters and I do not need such satisfaction.
How long more must Guyana be called a homophobic nation? How long more must we suffocate and ‘kill’ our young generation who have great potential for tomorrow? How long more must some dreadful, pitiless fans of popular stars continue to create havoc, amusement, and devastating, insulting remarks against such people?
It is time that we grow up. I am a mere citizen who has witnessed many persons suffering and concealing themselves because they fear being expelled from society.
I consider this the best source to channel my thoughts around the nation and help me in the fight to make Guyana a place worth living in. Guyana has gained independence a long time now, but despite this fact, the freedom is still limited. I do hope these thoughts can be put into a better form and can help in some way or the other to help countless suffering citizens of our dear land of Guyana.
