Police are still combing the Five Star Backdam in the North West District (NWD) with the hope of capturing four bandits who attacked a group of Brazilian miners, in an early morning robbery on Monday, during which a man was shot.
The wounded man, Brazilian Felix De Souza, is presently a patient at the Georgetown Hospital’s High Dependency Unit, nursing gunshot wounds to the shoulder and jaw.
Police in a press release yesterday confirmed that they are investigating a reported robbery under arms that occurred at about 07:00 hours on Monday at Five Star Backdam, NWD, where two Brazilian nationals were attacked and robbed and another shot and injured by four men, two of whom were armed with handguns.
Police say their investigations so far have revealed that the perpetrators entered a mining camp and held up the two Brazilians and took away a quantity of raw gold, a digital camera and a licensed .32 pistol with seven rounds from them. During the intrusion the men discharged several rounds, hitting Brazilian national Felix De Souza to his shoulder and jaw.
However, a reliable source’s account of what transpired differs slightly from the police’s version.
The source said that during the process of bringing the gold, which amounted to eight ounces, out of the backdam, two of the Brazilians, one with the firearm, had gone ahead to “clear the way”.
They were the first to be confronted by the bandits who took away the firearm and waited for the other camp members with the gold to arrive.
The source said that the other miners, including de Souza and a woman, saw the bandits and attempted to turn around in a bid to escape. That was when the bandits opened fire, hitting De Souza.
The men then took away eight ounces of raw gold which the woman had in her possession and escaped.
Although police were given a description of the men, the vast area of the interior will certainly present a challenge when it comes to capturing them.
Meanwhile, the police release stated that during their investigations they arrested two men in another mining camp in whose possession 105 grams of cocaine and 1kilogram 350 grams of marijuana were found.
