When Joel ‘Mr. Majestic’ McCrae and Edmond DeClou face off in the July edition of the Friday night fights, both pugilists would want to come out victorious and go on to fight Howard ‘Battersea Bomber’ Eastman for the local middleweight title he currently holds.
The organizers of the card have toiled for months, systematically plotting the course of both pugilists to create just the kind of situation that is panning out. DeClou has already proven his worth after engaging light/heavyweight champion, Kwesi Jones in an exciting trilogy where both boxers enjoyed success over each other. Jones then went on to defeat Eastman but in a 4 rounds clash.
Ever since turning in a masterful display against Eastman, Jones has lost out to Lennox Allen, while DeClou has trudged on with a victory over McRae. The latter fighter is still convinced that he had done enough to have earned the verdict but the judges ruled otherwise. Nevertheless McCrae went on to defeat ‘Dangerous’ Denny Dalton and promptly called out to DeClou for a rematch. Not only has the organizers acquiesced to the request but they have thrown in the Eastman bout as an added incentive to push the fighters forward.
Both fighters are rangy and have deceptive power but it is McRae with an awesome 8-1-1 record that may be holding the edge. Such stats could vindicate his intentions of stopping his man somewhere around the sixth stanza.
One cannot rule out such a possibility especially since McRae has stopped five of his opponents with Trinidadian Kevin Neveson suffering the worst fate after he was knocked out with the first punch of the bout. Eon Blue attempted to get passed McRae twice but was knocked out in the 3rd and 4th rounds respectively. Mike Pitman fared no better, succumbing in the second stanza.
DeClou is the only boxer to have gotten passed McCrae and he would be coming into the second shindig with the psychological advantage. He trains out of Linden, a hilly region that provides just the type of terrain to facilitate optimum physical fitness. Come to think of it, DeClou has never been faulted for fitness and this speaks highly of his discipline and determination.
Both fighters would want to face off with the former European champion which should be an added incentive for both pugilists to dig deep. The last time that they clashed, in the December edition of the Friday night fights, the latter fighter pounded out a split decision verdict over the former even though the loser felt that he had been ‘done in.’
McRae had shrugged aside that disappointment and then went on to defeat ‘Dangerous’ Denny Dalton in another edition of the card. He has since signed for the return bout against his nemesis. A relatively tall fighter that practices his trade out of Trinidad and Tobago, McRae has vowed to avenge the loss and has even promised that the judges input would be totally unnecessary.
“I was not living the life of a boxer,” McRae proclaimed when quizzed on what had gone wrong in the first meeting. “I was beset with personal problems that caused be to become defocused and so I was unable to give one hundred percent,” continued McRae.
Despite such setbacks, he still believes that he should been given the verdict. This time around he has promised to relieve the judges of the responsibility of coming up with a winner. “DeClou will not last,” he emphatically stated.
Both fighters are engaged in intense training sessions; McRae at the Forgotten Youth Foundation (FYF) and DeClou at the Young Lions Gym in Wismar Linden. If any bout on the ProAm cards should be regarded as all important, the DeClou/McRae bout should be it. Fans will not want to miss this showpiece.
The ProAm affair is a Guyana Boxing Board of Control initiative in collaboration with the Guyana Amateur Boxing Association (GABA), the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports and the National Communication Network. Tickets are $1,000 and $500 for adults and children respectively.
