– athlete’s expectations are high
Guyana’s Junior 400m sensation, Stephan James was expected to leave Guyana this morning for Florida where he will compete at the Pan American Junior Championships.
James told Kaieteur Sport that his expectations are high ahead of the blue-ribbon Games, which is one of the highest levels for junior competition for Pan Americans.
The Pan Am Games runs from July 22-24 and James believes that his recent form is testimony to the fact that he can do well at the Games. “My expectation is high and I am confident that I will do well,” James indicated.
The other athletes identified to compete at the Pan Am Game are all United States-based; those include sprinter, Kadecia Baird, hurdler, Ayana Amsterdam and long jumper, Rolyce Boston. It was unclear up to yesterday if all the athletes were confirmed. Amsterdam was expected to be at the World Youth Championships two weeks ago, but did not show up.
However, James said that his preparations went on unhindered as he was focused on maintaining his ascendancy. He stated that he worked on technical drills to improve his effectiveness with his coaches, Julian Edmonds and Sham Johnny.
“I did a lot of technical and mental work to be ready for these Games. I am always looking to run my personal best,” he said. James represented Guyana at the Junior CARIFTA Games earlier this year where he was fourth in the 400m final.
His time in that final was 48.01 and he told this newspaper that he is aiming for a 46-second run in the event. James said once that happens, he should end up in the medal hunt. He stated that the same attitude is being adopted in the 200m.
No Coach was named for the Pan Am Junior team, but Faye Naughton is expected to manage the unit in Florida. (Juanita Hooper and Edison Jefford)
