Barbados take first innings points from W/Wards
At the end of the second day of their first round Regional three-day under-19 three-day cricket match at Everest yesterday, Jamaica were in control after Trinidad and Tobago were asked to follow-on after Teswayne Creary (77) and Donovan Nelson (57) helped Jamaica to 320.
T&T were bowled out for 136 and by the close yesterday were 52-3 in their second innings, still 132 away from making Jamaica bat again with seven wickets in hand.
Jamaica began the second day on 278-6 and Creary faced 19 balls before his dismissal by Maraj at 287- 7. Fabian Allen (4) departed at 310-8 and Marquino Mindley was LBW for a duck as Nelson was last dismissed for 57.
When T&T began their innings, pacer James McDonald removed West Indies under-19 player Keiron Joseph (13) and Christian Herrena (2) to leave the score on 17-2.
The third wicket fell at 51 and T&T never recovered as Nelson took five wickets by getting rid of Dwane Cookburn (28), Steven Katwaroo (33), Idress Mohammed (2), Rajv Maraj and Derone Davis (0).
Akeal Hosein was then caught by Nelson off Allen as he struggled to score 18 and Isaiah Rajah (21) and Philton Williams (5) were caught off Ramon Senior as they were all out in 55 overs.
With Jamaica leading by 184 runs, T&T were asked to follow-on and lost their first wicket with the score on 12 when Joseph was LBW James McDonald.
Christian Herrena (22) was bowled by Mindley and Dwane Cookburn was run out for 13 as the lads from Carnival County finished on 52-3 from 30 overs and in big trouble heading into the final day which is scheduled to commence at 10:00hrs today.
Meanwhile at DCC, Barbados were 292-8 in their second innings with an overall lead of 305 against defending champions Windward Islands at the end of day two of their opening round Regional Under-19 three-day cricket competition yesterday.
Mario Rampersaud, whose father is Guyanese, was unbeaten 34 and Chaim Holder on seven. This was after Skipper and the competition’s lone Test player Kraigg Brathwaite was caught at forward short-leg off left-arm spinner Kavem Hodge for 16 at 48-1.
Earlier, Barbados took a 13-run first innings lead as the Windwards, starting the day on 137 for nine, were bowled out for 148 off 53.3 overs in reply to Barbados’ first innings 161.
After Shai Hope was run out for four at 54-2, Shane Parris was caught behind off spinner Jamaal James for 60 at 105-3 while Kyle Mayers and Justin Greaves fell to Edward. Anthony Alleyne was run out for 79, Neil Browne was leg before to Hodge for 36 and Ravendra Persaud was caught and bowled by Hodge for a duck to leave the score on 277-8.
Hodge has 3-78 and Edward, 2-75 for the Islanders whose innings ended 22 minutes after the start of play when medium-pacer Greaves had Dwight Thomas leg before wicket as he essayed a drive for 77 after resuming on 69. The 17-year-old Greaves, a West Indies under-19 all rounder, finished with career-best figures of 7-40 off 13.3 overs.
Brathwaite, bowling off-breaks, took two for 27 off 15 overs including three maidens. Today is the final day and play is scheduled to start at 10:00hrs.
