On a day in which just under two hours were lost due to rain at Providence, Guyana put themselves in a strong position for an outright win against the Leeward Islands as they ended the second day of their three-day Regional under-19 first round cricket contest yesterday in the driver’s seat.
By the close Guyana, who declared at Tea on 317-9 replying to the Islanders 107, had the visitors in plenty of trouble on 112-6 in their second innings, still 98 runs away from avoiding an innings defeat on the final day.
Seventeen-year-old Guyanese Debutant Chanderpaul Hemraj took his overnight 72 to 88 before he clipped a Shaquille Martina full-toss to short mid-wicket after batting for 243 minutes, 168 balls and hitting 11 fours.
Vice-Captain Kwame Crosse who took his first day 30 to 61 from 168 balls with six fours, shared in a 117-run fourth wicket stand with Hemraj before Clinton Pestano made 43 and Skipper Ronsford Beaton 39 not out to give Guyana a 210-run first innings lead.
Burly Antiguan Rahkeem Cornwall, in his fourth year at this level, took 4-56 with his gentle off-spin and Larry Audain supported with 2-46 for the Islanders.
Akeem Saunders, the only player with West Indies under-19 experience in the Leeward side stroked six fours in 44. But he and Cleon Reece (0) were dismissed just before the close leaving the Islanders depending heavily on Cornwall, who is unbeaten on 34 (32 balls with five fours and a six) to deny the home team victory on the final day.
Earlier, after a single ball was bowled when play resumed rain sent the players scurrying off the field and after a 44-minute delay, play restarted.
The Guyanese progressed to 171 before another shower at 11: 07hrs ended the first session in which 97 minutes were lost.
When the action resumed 47 minutes late in the second session due to more rain and tardy work from the ground staff, Hemraj perished 12 short of his seventh career century and Guyana were 171-4.
Joemal LaFleur joined Crosse in bright sunshine but was soon caught and bowled by Skipper Rahkeem Cornwall for 10 at 190-5.
Crosse, looking to become the first Malteenoes batsman to score a ton at this level since Nezam Hafiz against the Leewards in 1988 in Barbados, was taken at short mid-wicket off Chavil Archibald at 226 after reaching his third fifty at this level.
Clinton Pestano attacked the bowling and along with Anthony Adams took the score to 261 before Adams (4) seemed unlucky to be given LBW to Cornwall’s gentle off-spin.
Pestano was removed by Duan Webbe four runs later after his cameo 43 lasted 50 balls and included five fours and a six. Cornwall removed Amir Khan (4) at 271-9 before Skipper Ronsford Beaton hammered three sixes and a four in a pugnacious unbeaten 39 before declaring at Tea.
Beaton clean bowled Webb for a duck with just a run on the board when the Leewards began their reply, while two wickets tumbled at 23 as Elijah Peters (11) and Martina (12) departed.
Larry Audain (7) was lbw to Khan at 55-4 before left-arm spinner Gudakesh Moite trapped Saunders lbw and Khan got rid of Reece off the day’s final ball.
