Delta Airlines is currently conducting daily flights direct from New York to Guyana, to cater for the influx of visitors during the busy August holidays.
Speaking at press briefing at his South Road office on Monday, last, with Sales Manger of Delta Airlines Junior Horatio, Minister of Tourism Maniram Prashad said he is happy that Delta has increased its schedule to Guyana by providing daily flights from New York, which started on June 22, last, and will continue until mid-September.
He said that Delta usually brings in its passengers on a 757 aircraft which has a capacity of about 190 passengers. But in the peak periods, they would be using a bigger aircraft – a 767 – which can accommodate 240 passengers.
Minister Prashad said he is very pleased that Delta, which has been providing excellent service to Guyana, has increased its flights, catering for the expected flood of visitors that will be arriving during the peak season.
The Minister disclosed that they are exploring a new route from Toronto, Canada to Georgetown, with Delta. “…but Mr. Horatio cannot confirm anything here now. He will have to speak to the management overseas, because the New York/Georgetown route for Delta is very profitable and we feel that a flight from Toronto to Georgetown will also be profitable for Delta, so we are exploring that avenue,” he explained.
Prashad once again dispelled rumours of Delta pulling out of Guyana, noting that the airline has expressed its satisfaction so far with the Georgetown/New York route.
Sales Manager Junior Horatio said that since the airline begun operations in Guyana in June 2008, it has provided tremendous service on the traditionally busy route.
“And because of the amount of cities worldwide that Delta flies to, it gives the Guyanese consumers and the travelling public every possibility to go to any part of the world that they desire,” he emphasised.
“I think Delta’s impact in the market has been nothing short of tremendous,” Horatio insisted.
