Dear Editor,
I agree with Ray Chikrie (KN Jul 19) endorsing the air service being provided by Panama’s COPA airlines. COPA has been a successful airline expanding service to every major Latin city as well as major cities in the US and Toronto.
It flies to Trinidad from where many Guyanese connect to Panama for that country’s free trade zone. Trinis also use it to fly to Miami, NY and Aruba and Cuba. However, fares on COPA are relatively high compared with other carriers for the same route and it is out of the way for Guyanese or Trinis wishing to travel to JFK.
One would have to first fly to the Panama City Hub which is out of the way going west and then flying back east to get to NY. It is a much longer journey than flying from the Port of Spain hub of CAL which fares are also substantially less than COPA.
It is not unusual for interested companies to use an airline for a charter service. It may make better sense for a Guyana interest company to charter COPA to fly directly between JFK-GEO.
El Salvador’s TACA ran that service for Universal Airlines and so did LOT Polish, Iceland Air, World Airways, etc. North America ran charters for Guyana Airways, Travel Span, and Constellation, etc. Guyana is in desperate need of another air service for Toronto, NY, and Miami.
The government needs to pursue this course as the current airlines cannot meet demand denying many overseas Guyanese from visiting their homeland and spending money which benefit the economy. Their fares are also prohibitive for the Guyanese pockets when compared with fares for similar distances.
The government should encourage the establishment of a charter or another airline service and offer it some kind of assistance to guarantee its longevity as the TT government does for CAL. The addition of another airline will not negatively impact on CAL or Delta but may lead to lower fares and better service. And it will certainly lead to more people visiting our homeland.
