– plays Rest Team at Sports Hall
Guyana’s senior men’s basketball team that will compete at Caribbean Basketball Confederation (CBC) Championships in the Bahamas this weekend will be in action tonight at Cliff Anderson’s Sports Hall (CASH) in their last practice game before departing.
The team will play the best possible ‘other’ composition here, the national ‘B’ team, if you want to call it that, in an intense encounter tonight. It will be the first time the national team will be involved in a game in a competitive situation since being named on Sunday.
The national senior men’s team will run the systems that they have worked on for weeks with the coaches, Robert Cadogan and assistant, Lugard Mohan. They face a side that will be identified at some stage today. Mark Agard is the national ‘B’ team coach.
Basketball enthusiasts will have their first opportunity to asses the team in a game situation as an unexposed and young team depart for the Caribbean’s most prestigious basketball tournament. It will give the first glimpse of how Guyana will perform.
Cadogan told Kaieteur Sport yesterday that the team is expected to be smooth in transition plays and fundamentally sound. He said that such a practice game was necessary for the coaching staff to make assessments before departing for the Bahamas.
“It will actually be our third practice match. The other two were not so organised because we did not name the final 12 until Sunday. So what we will actually have is the team that will play in the Bahamas coming up against a rest side,” Cadogan said.
He noted that he is confident that the young team will be able to impress critics and leave them at the crossroad thinking that the local unit are in with a chance of winning the title. He encouraged supporters to come out and back the national basketball team.
Steve Neils Jr., Dwayne Roberts, Ryan Gullen, Royston Siland, Neil Marks, Shane Webster, Kurt Elias, Ryan Stephney, Rodwell Fortune, Akeem Kanhai, Stephon Gillis, and United States based guard, Kerron McKenzie are the members of the national team.
