Four former outstanding cricket administrators with decades of devoted service were honoured by the Berbice Cricket Board (BCB) last Thursday. Messrs John Bart, Gordon Peters, Walter Luckham and Rodwell Henry were rewarded when the Board hosted its Fourth Annual Tribute to Cricket Heroes Programme at its office, 7-1 Cheddi Jagan Street, New Amsterdam, Berbice.
Hilbert Foster, giving a review of the programme stated that in the past, many cricket officials worked beyond the call of duty without being recognised and that the current administration under the leadership of Keith Foster was determined that every hero must be recognised and honoured.
With this in mind, the BCB since 2008 has been hosting the Tribute to Cricket Heroes Programme and a total of 20 persons have been honoured to date. Foster thanked the four awardees for their unselfish service to Berbice cricket and for laying a strong foundation for the current administration to build on.
He urged the awardees to pass on their experiences and knowledge to the younger generation of leaders as the Berbice Cricket Board strives to lift the leadership of the game to a higher level.
Board President Keith Foster and Treasurer Anil Beharry both spoke on the importance of remembering past heroes of the game off the field as cricketers tend to be the only ones who are recognised.
Beharry challenged the awardees to continue to serve since the BCB needs every hand on the wheel, while Foster committed his Board to lifting the standard of the sport in the Ancient County even higher on and off the field of play.
The President also stated that every hero in Berbice would be recognised and honoured by his administration as it was very important to remember the past in planning for the future.
All of the awardees expressed gratitude to the Berbice Cricket Board for honouring them as they all served cricket out of Love for the game and were committed to the overall development of the sport at all levels in the county.
They all praised the BCB for the work it was doing and committed themselves to assisting in the future.
John Bart was an outstanding Guysuco Executive who led a cricket revolution on the West Coast of Berbice especially at the Blairmont Community Centre; Gordon Peters served as a Berbice Cricket Board Vice President and Selector for many years, Walter Luckham served as Marketing Manager of the Berbice Cricket Board, while Rodwell Henry was a former Executive of the BCB and was for years the driving force behind the success of the Police Cricket Club – Berbice.
BCB Special Events Committee has expressed gratitude to Mr. Ramesh Sunich of the Trophy Stall – Bourda Market and the Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports Club for sponsoring the event.
