The battle for bragging rights as the best GT&T FastBall team on the East Coast of Demerara has reached its high point with the finals of this zone set to unfold tomorrow at the BV Community Ground.
The finalists will be known this afternoon when the semifinals are contested at the same venue; BV Triumph United A team will come up against Daddy’s Enterprise while Ann’s Grove and Golden Stars B will face off in the other encounter.
All four semifinalists have made it through to the round-of-32 which will get cracking on Sunday at the Mackenzie Sports Club Ground, Linden.
In some mouth watering semifinal action yesterday at the BV Ground, BV A team were pushed to the limit by BV Lions whom they defeated 1-0 on sudden death penalty kicks after a 0-0 regulation time stalemate. The more active BV boys found it difficult to put away their older counterparts, both teams missing six second penalty kicks, BV squandering two, both with the blue ball.
Desmond Williams converted BVTU’s penalty, goalkeeper Kevin Kelvin who otherwise had a good game for BV Lions muffed his side’s chance to send the opponents through.
In the other game at BV yesterday, Ann’s Grove/Line Stars United erased a 1-0 deficit to bang Buxton B 4-1. Buxton had taken the early lead through Jumalo Majoo’s 2nd minute goal, a lead they held until the 23rd minute when Dwayne Rogers equalized for Ann’s Grove.
Their after it was no turning back for Ann’s Grove as they banged in two more on their way to an emphatic win; Kevon Barry in the 26th and Antonius Jackson in the 29th (blue ball) closing off Buxton.
Over at the Plaisance Ground, Red Lion’s lost to Daddy’s Enterprise and Golden Stars sent Melanie packing.
At the GFC Ground on Sunday evening, War Mongers defeated Brave Heart 3-0; Western Tigers A squeezed past Chelsea 3-2, Customs FC edged Lodge Vegas 1-0 and GFC Masters upstaged Roxanne Warriors 3-0.
Matches will continue at the GFC and MSC Grounds tomorrow while the St. Ignatius Ground will host the Lethem Zone matches tomorrow and Thursday.
Tomorrow’s matches, Gladiators play Strikers United and Saints Undertakers play Lethem Snatchers.
