Tournament format to be addressed
Ramaal Lewis was named as the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) Under-15 Championships, while Brandon Chanderpaul, the son of West Indies Test batsman Shivnarine Chanderpaul, was among the MVPs of this year’s Regional under-15 two-day competition which was played in Trinidad.
Lewis, the Jamaican captain and leg-spinner was given the accolade during the prize-giving ceremony, which was staged at the Main Ballroom, Cascadia Hotel, St Ann’s on Friday evening.
Lewis led Jamaica to the title – their third in four years – and was also named as his team’s MVP.
The other MVPs were Jeremy Solozano (Trinidad and Tobago), Chanderpaul (Guyana), Chad Williams (Barbados), Shawn Tuitt (Leeward Islands) and Gidron Pope (Windward Islands)…
Rawl Lewis, the ex-Grenada, Windward Islands and West Indies leg- spinner, who recently took up the role as the WICB project officer/tournament director, congratulated the players, as well as the officials, for their performances during the two-week long competition. He also urged the players to “display good behaviour, even as cricketers”.
Lewis continued, “…for me, cricket is no longer a sport where you put on a t-shirt and a track pants and hit a ball and make some money. It’s a way of life.”
WICB director Baldath Mahabir, who delivered the feature address, also commended the players, officials and the TTCB for their respective roles in the tournament.
He noted, “I did hear the rumblings concerning the format and related issues. I want to humbly suggest that a post-tournament evaluation be done and a report submitted to the WICB with haste, so that the concerns can be studied and addressed where necessary.”
Kaieteur Sport’s Sean Devers was among those who questioned the restrictive 30-overs first innings format at a time when the West Indies is struggling to produce batsmen who can bat for long periods.
