At an Alliance for Change fundraiser in the Bronx over the weekend, Una Clark was the guest speaker.
Jamaica-born Clark was the first Caribbean-born woman to be elected to New York City’s legislature. She served her Brooklyn community for a decade in office and was responsible for sponsoring more than 300 pieces of legislation.
Clark called on all Guyanese to make the right decision, emphasizing that change is the only way forward if Guyana is to remove itself from the racial divide that exists and grow as a country that is unified.
She emphasized that campaigns are costly and financially supporting the candidate is the only way the message can get to all communities in Guyana.
She called on women to be proactive and become involved in the movement if they want a healthier Guyana for their children and families.
Guyana’s current population is said to be less than 800,000 people where more than 50 percent of Guyanese currently live outside of Guyana due to lack of jobs, high cost of living, rampant crimes, money laundering, narcotics trading and overwhelming government corruption.
Khemraj Ramjattan, presidential candidate of the Alliance of Change told the fund-raiser that his party wants to repeal many of the antediluvian and partial laws set by the incumbent People’s Progress Party and former People’s National Congress during the last four decades.
One that he promises to change outgoing President Bharrat Jagdeo’s US$15,000 monthly paycheck for life after he steps down later this year.
Focusing on young adults, the Alliance for Change aims to encourage foreign business development, education opportunities, lower the value added tax, develop the social and physical infrastructure so Guyanese will not seek to leave Guyana in search of better livelihoods, Ramjattan said.
