The Edinburgh man who brutally chopped his common- law partner to death on March 27, 2010 is still on the run.
More than a year after the gruesome murder had rocked the Ancient County, there has been no sign of former cane harvester, Rooplall “Kelly” Boodhoo, who delivered several chops to his 32- year- old wife, Lilowtie “Pinky” Seera of Lot 1068 Glasgow Housing Scheme, East Bank Berbice.
Her mother, 52- year- old Lata Inderdeo, was also wounded in the ordeal.
Murder victim: Liloutie “Pinky” Seeram with her husband Rooplall “Kelly” Boodhoo during happier times.
The incident took place just about 01:30 hours, and only three occupants were in the two-bedroom home – the woman, her mother and her reputed husband.
Lilowtee Seeram was severely chopped three times – to the back of her head, and on both arms. In the process, three fingers on the left arm were severed and were recovered by police moments later. Inderdeo, who lived with the couple for several years, sustained chops to the right shoulder and the palm of her left hand.
After the police arrived on the scene, the women were rushed to the New Amsterdam Hospital where Lilowtee Seeram died while receiving medical attention. It was highly believed that the suspect was under the influence of alcohol and sources have told Kaieteur News that he may have been also using illicit drugs.
Police made several fruitless checks in the nearby canfields, where it was suspected that Boodhoo had escaped.
A relative close to the family has said that is it widely believed that Boodhoo is hiding in Suriname and hopes that the law enforcement authorities have not given up on the search. The person went on to describe the abusive relationship in which the young lady and Boodhoo was living.
They added that Boodhoo would normally come home very late in the nights, drunk, and abuse the girl who would have to get up from bed to open the door and also cook late- night meals for him.
The source also revealed that the girl’s relatives knew about the rocky relationship but had now wanted Seeram to give up on Boodhoo since they [the family] were afraid of the “stigma of separation among East Indian families” and “what people would say”.
The couple’s two children – 14 year old Hirawattie ‘Narissa’ Boodhoo, a student of Berbice High School and 11-year old Narendra Boodhoo called Nicholas of Edinburgh Primary School now reside with Ramnarine Seeram.
When Kaieteur News contacted Seeram, he was skeptical to speak to the media since he was afraid of victimization and even retaliation from his son- in- law still at large. He said that the children would be traumatized if the matter was discussed again in their presence. He related that his wife had told him that she had heard Bhoodoo chopping their daughter on the night of the murder and it was as “if he was chopping beef”. He related that the house where the murder took place is still there but is now empty and abandoned.
“Everyday is a memory; every day is something with me child. This man hurt we so much”, Seeram said in a reminiscent tone.
Seeram added that he usually tried his best to counsel his son- in- law to live his life properly but “he would not listen”.
