Russian businesses have expressed an interest in trading and investing in Guyana, according to Russian Ambassador to Guyana Nikolay Smirnov.
During a recent courtesy call to President of the Georgetown Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI), Komal Ramnauth, the Ambassador noted that Russian businesses have shown particular interest in the areas of oil exploration, gold mining, Linden-Lethem road modernization, development of hydropower and aquaculture sectors, supplies of passenger hovercrafts, boats, air traffic control and navigation systems in Guyana.
Ramnauth pledged GCCI’s support in seeking to develop economic ties with Russia. He noted that GCCI will be happy to collaborate with the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Russia to promote trade activities.
In the coming months, the Chamber will be exploring ways of advancing the Russian-Guyanese Co-operation and providing access to information to the local business community on opportunities in Russia and vice versa.
Over the past year, GCCI has been seeking to improve trade with French Guiana, Suriname, Indonesia and even the United States among others having had discussions with the various Embassies and Chambers of Commerce.

Only one year ago, Guyana and Russia celebrated the 40th anniversary of the establishment of diplomat ties in the fields of culture, education, and trade.
Ambassador Nikolay graduated from the Moscow State Institute of International Relations and has since served in the diplomatic service, occupying different posts in the Ministry and diplomatic missions abroad.
He worked abroad in the embassy of the USSR in the United States during the period 1974 to 1979 and 1981 to 1988. From 1993 to 1998, he served as a Consul General of Russia in Toronto, Canada.
Versed in English, Greek and French, the Ambassador has been the Deputy Director of the Department of North America of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation since 2007.
