After several months of uncertainty, regional air carrier Barbadian low-cost airline REDjet has been given the green light to fly into Trinidad and Tobago.
Sources close to the REDjet have confirmed that the low-budget carrier would touch down at Piarco International Airport within the next few days.
Reports out of the twin-island republic stated that a compromise had been reached between Trinidad and Tobago’s Civil Aviation Authority and Airone Ventures Limited, parent body of REDjet Airlines, following a court matter in the Port of Spain High Court last Friday.
The report is the latest twist in a three month-old saga that began with Trinidad and Tobago and Jamaica denying entry to the carrier. It escalated to verbal brawling between Caribbean Community (CARICOM) leaders, accusations and denials, a flurry of political and bureaucratic meetings, questions about the safety of the airline’s 24-year-old fleet of passenger jets, and withering inter-island criticism by regional people both of their governments and of each other.
REDjet official revealed that they are engaged in discussions with six of 13 countries in which to launch operations later this year. Those routes will be announced within the next two months and will include routes from Guyana.
REDjet, the Caribbean’s first low- fare airline, was officially launched in Guyana in April of this year and its inaugural commercial flight arrived at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA) from Barbados on May 10, with 149 passengers on board, including top REDjet officials and representatives of the Barbadian Government.
