-Trinidad-based, Ifill omitted
By Edison Jefford
Guyana has named its representative team for the upcoming Caribbean Basketball Confederation (CBC) Championships in keeping with yesterday’s deadline for team submissions. The local unit was named without Trinidad and Tobago-based Andrew Ifill.
Ifill, who reportedly revealed that he was available for the championships, was omitted based on some difficulties he encountered in getting time off from his playing schedule in Trinidad. Head Coach, Robert Cadogan said the team had to be submitted on time.
“Ifill’s problem is transportation. He is getting a problem with getting the time off to be with the team. It is unlikely that he will represent us,” Cadogan told Kaieteur Sport. The names of the 12 players and photographs had to be submitted to CBC yesterday.
Asked about the preparations of the team, Cadogan said that he has high expectations for the side in the tournament that will, according to CBC General Secretary, Sabrina Mitchell, showcase the Caribbean’s elite basketball players, ranging from local to NBA stars.
“We had some practice sessions and the team is looking good. The team has really put in a lot of effort to get themselves ready for this level of competition,” Cadogan, who holds certification in high performance preparation from the Olympic Solidarity, indicated.
The Head Coach believes that the 12 players named are Guyana’s best at the moment and justify their place in the team. He said that most of them will be exposed to high levels of competition at the CBC Championships for the first time in their careers.
“The team is young and I am expecting them to be able to cope with the various situations. I am aware that it is not going to be easy, but we are going there to win. We have an advantage, which is the fact that all the guys have trained and practice together,” he said.
Guyana is grouped in Zone ‘A’ of the tournament with Jamaica, US Virgin Islands, Antigua and Barbuda and Turks & Caicos. The CBC Championships is the stepping stone for qualification for the CentroBasket 2012, Olympic Games and World Championships.
Point and Shooting Guard, Steve Neils Jr. was named as captain of the team that include Dwayne Roberts (forward); Ryan Gullen (forward); Royston Siland (forward); Neil Marks (forward); Shane Webster (forward); Kurt Elias (centre); Ryan Stephney (guard); Rodwell Fortune (guard); Akeem Kanhai (guard); Stephon Gillis (guard); Kerron McKenzie (guard).
Former Ravens Coach, now FIBA accredited referee, Lugard Mohan was named as the Assistant Coach, while Ewart Padmore was identified as Manager. Guyana’s FIBA referee on the tour will be Aubrey Younge. The team is expected to depart Thursday morning.
