– NATI claim third place
Clearly the more superior team both tactically and technically GTI saved the best for last as they easily defeated Christianburg / Wismar 5-3 in the final to become the inaugural champions of the Digicel sponsored Nationwide Schools Football Competition which ended yesterday, at the GCC ground.
Playing a more compact brand of football GTI took the lead in the 20th minute through their prolific striker Jermaine Junor, who dribbled past two defenders, before hitting a scorching left-footer past Yannick Simmons in the far corner.
Two minutes later, Christianburg /Wismar’s top marksman Clarence Higgins equalised when he found himself alone in the penalty area to lash one past GTI’s custodian Nkosie Barker.
The team from Georgetown regained their ascendancy in the 24th minute when Darren Peters, who finished with a brace of goals netted his first as they took a 2-1 lead at the break.
Six minutes into the second period, GTI stretched their advantage through Darryl Fraser, who hammered home from close range.
However, Christianburg / Wismar, a team capable of coming from behind, reduced the deficit by one when Lashley beat Barker from inside the 15-yard box to make the contest close.
GTI, however, would have none of it as Keifer Adams gave them the cushion they were looking for after netting in the 64th minute to make it a 4-2 game well inside the second half.
Lashley, who though looked way below his best, added a second five minutes from full time, but that effort was erased when Peters duplicated his feat, beating goalkeeper Simmons with a low drive to make it a 5-3 lead, before the final whistle came two minutes later sending the GTI team and their fans into rapturous celebrations.
In the playoff for third place, New Amsterdam Technical Institute (NATI) beat a game Waramadong unit 2-1 on penalty kicks after regulation time ended in a nail biting 4-4 stalemate.
For the winners, Leroy James netted a double in the 38th and 48th minutes of play, while he was supported by strikes from Alaska Burnett 10th and Ron Lyken 81st.
Waramadong’s goals came off the boots of Arnon Fredericks 15th, Alwayne Francis 39th, McCord Kramer 42nd and Derwin Percy 86th.
The winners received the winning and the Lien Trophies along with medals.
All the other teams received medals that were presented by Digicel officials.
Present at yesterday’s games were Prime Minister Samuel Hinds, Education Minister Shaik Baksh, Digicel’s CEO Gregory Dean, Marketing Executive Jacqueline James, Sponsorship and Events Manager Gavin Hope among others.
GTI’s Jermaine Junor was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player and Top goal-scorer of the competition with 23 goals.
