Young doctors on their internship and medical students of the University of Guyana Medical School will now be able to take classes or just relax between rounds in their newly renovated facility.
The University of Guyana’s Clinical Sciences Complex located in the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) compound was recently renovated and refurbished. The works were done under funding received when a grant was negotiated on behalf of the University by the Center for Disease Control (CDC), Guyana, for the purchase of equipment and the provision of essential services.
According to the Director of the School of Medicine, Dr. Dalgleish Joseph, the grant was executed through the International Training and Education Centre for Health (ITEC), headed by Dr. Wallace Plummer. Priority was given to the project and work on the building was completed between January and May 2011.
In his remarks at the opening two Fridays ago, Dr. Joseph also said that the building was in a state of disrepair and in need of serious attention. The now fully air conditioned Clinical Sciences Complex at GPHC houses better washroom facilities, makes provision for an internet café equipped with multiple work stations and a small collection of text books, journals and magazines for persons who may want to make quick references. There are also plans in place to purchase equipment and see it installed by the beginning of the next academic year to create a hotspot where both staff and students can easily access the internet for information relevant to their work.
In his remarks at the ceremony, Vice-Chancellor Lawrence Carrington said that “the improvements made to the building were a step in the right direction.” He went on to note that the endeavour would help the University to attain a better profile since the School of Medicine would be seeking reaccreditation shortly.
In recognition of the longstanding relationship between the Medical School and the Hospital Burt White a representative from the Georgetown Hospital pledged the hospital’s continued cooperation and support for the School. Meanwhile Medical Officer of CDC, Dr. Curtis La Fleur, also pledged his organization’s continued support for the project and the School of Medicine.
Speaking on behalf of the medical students, Student President, Davendra Bhagwandin, said that he is grateful for the improvements that were made to the building, making it more conducive to learning and studying. He also stated that the students are committed to the safekeeping and maintenance of the facilities.
