Two hundred stakeholders, including healthcare professionals, representatives from pharmaceutical companies, and members of the public yesterday attended a one-day seminar on Palliative Care and Chronic Pain Management at the Regency Suites.
The seminar was a collaborative effort between the International Association for Pain and The Beacon Foundation, the forerunners for the provision of palliative care in Guyana.
Palliative care has been ongoing in Guyana for the past 20 years and is delivered by nurses of The Beacon Foundation free of cost. Though, the clientele of the foundation is about 80 persons and there are only three nurses, its service reaches patients in all the Regions.
The primary goal of the seminar was to increase and improve the capacity of health professionals to provide evidence-based, timely, safe, compassionate, patient-centred and quality pain control and palliative care.
Patients of The Beacon Foundation have testified that the nurses over the years have displayed attributes that the seminar focused on. Although there are many diseases that require palliative care, according to Cecilia Bennie, Hospice Supervisor, the body focuses on cancer.
“We do look at HIV/AIDS patients, but minimally since there are other agencies which focus on that, but they can come into Beacon Foundation for vitamins and counseling,” Bennie stated.
Celina, a cancer patient, who has been receiving support through the foundation, had only praises for the nurses and services provided. The woman noted that she values the moral and emotional support.
“Sometimes when I feel depress and like committing suicide I call the nurses and would seek comfort,’ she noted.
