West Demerara All Starz are Kings of FastBall on the West Demerara, the Pouderoyen based side defeated West Demerara United (WDU) also based in Pouderoyen 3-2 in the Zone final on the West Side yesterday afternoon at the Den Amstel Community Centre Ground. On a cool Saturday afternoon with a colourful and involved crowd on hand; fans were treated to some exciting and riveting GT&T FastBall action in this inaugural competition.
The upset of the afternoon however was the second semifinal which saw underdogs West Demerara United knocking out Uitvlugt Image led by former National Defender Orville Bobb; the team also included striker Lerone Jacobs and goalkeeper Sherwin Lanferman, players who were dominant for Uitvlugt and West Demerara a few years ago.
But such names did not daunt the focus of WDU which came from a goal down to beat Uitvlugt Image, compliments of the all important blue ball. Lerone Jacobs had given Uitvlugt the lead in the 12th minute to which WDU responded in the 20th through Aljurnal Scott. Four minutes later, Uitvlugt were back in the lead on account of Sean Bobb goal during a period where there were very dominant to the extent that they were awarded two six second penalties in the final 5 minutes and missed both, Jacobs and Lanferman the culprits.
There was a hint in the air at this point that something spectacular was about to unfold and it really did. In the final minute of play, after Uitvlugt were enjoying some excellent possession and chances, WDU managed to gain control of the blue ball and a squared ball across the Uitvlugt goal in the attacking third found the foot of Jamal Sobers who made no mistake in burying the shot; the effects on Uitvlugt was dagger like but for WDU, the joy overflowed as they sensed it was just seconds remaining in the match and their place in the final round-of-32 was but assured.
Seconds after the ball was restarted, the whistle blew to end the game, assuring WDU of their place in the Zone final and final round.
The first semifinal turned out to be a walk in the park for West Demerara champs, West Side All Starz as they bombarded Squatters ‘The Gunners’ United 7-3.
Their leading marksman Clement ‘Tudy’ Browne led the goal part with a hat-trick, he banged the nets in the 15th (blue ball) 21st minute. Tonie Lopes also scored with the blue ball in the 13th minute, while the other goals came off the boots of Zevon Atkinson in the 11th and Cleveland Walcott in the 25th. Kevo Adams scored all three goals (5, 29) for Squatters ‘The Gunners’ United.
The final, was also a high octane showdown with the two sides, already the representatives for West Demerara in the final round-of-32 battling for bragging rights as the Best in the West. That status went to the West Side All Straz which triumphed 3-2.
Tonie Lopes scored in the first minute of the game, a long range shout that dipped over the head of the goalkeeper and that advantage was doubled in the 2nd compliments of a Cleveland Walcott goal. Winston Johnson, who was the only player on target for WDU, scored in the 9th and 25th minutes to pull his side back into the game.
The winning goal was scored by West Side All Starz’ most prolific scorer Clement Brown in the 27th minute just before the blue ball was inserted.
West Demerara will be in the lime light again on July 29 when round-of-32 action will return to the West Side.
