Despite the many challenges faced by local swimmers, many of them turned up at the Castellani Swimming Pool to participate in the Guyana Amateur Swimming Association (GASA) Time Trials for this year’s Goodwill Swimming Championships scheduled for Trinidad and Tobago, next month.
While not enjoying the usual number of participants, some of the association’s youngest swimmers entered the fray to take at shot at qualifying for the Developmental Meet.
Making the grade in some events were Soroya Simmons and Athena Gaskin.
Simmons competing in the 13-14 girls age group has been a regular on a number of Goodwill contingents before and made the B grades in the 50M and 100M backstroke and the 50M butterfly.
Her seed time in the 50M back was 34.16 and her time in the final yesterday was 34.56; she clocked 1:17.06 in the 100M back and 35.60 in the 50M fly.
Gaskin (15-17 girls) who has also represented Guyana at Goodwill before, achieved the B time in the 200M freestyle; being clocked at 2:27.78 her seed time for this event is 2:19.66.
The event was originally scheduled to take place over a three day period but the sparse response by athletes forced GASA to run it off in just one day.
Despite this fact however, a long standing GASA official stated that it was heartening to see some of the youngest swimmers entering the competition and doing their best.
Those swimmers who are close to qualifying times will have another chance to make the team at the end of this month.
