The junior Lady Jags continue their preparation for participation in upcoming U17 and U20 female World Cup qualifiers with a camp in Toronto over the past week. The camp being conducted by GFF’s Female Technical Director Mark Rodrigues and coach Chris Brown will have players from the USA, England with the majority based in Toronto.
This camp follows scouting done in Guyana during the week of June 24th to July 3rd when TD Rodrigues along with Programme Director Colin Baker and GFF staff members Lindon France and Lawrennce Griffith. The areas visited were Lethem, Bartica, Georgetown, Linden, Berbice and West Demerara. Plans are being made to visit Laluni and revisit Lethem which seem to have the most talented players.
The players selected from the local scouting will be invited to a camp in Georgetown from July 18th to 25th.
Programme Director, Colin Baker explained that two separate camps are being held as a cost saving with the two camps being held in Toronto and Guyana. After the camps, TD Rodrigues and his Technical staff will determine the final list of 20 players selected for the first round of U17 Worlds Cup Qualifiers to be held in Guyana from August 18th to 21st.
The U20 World Cup qualifiers is schedule to begin late October early November and will be hosted by Anguilla.
It is expected that the Guyana U17 squad will comprise mainly of local based players while the U20 squad will comprise mainly overseas based players since approximately nine players from the senior Lady Jags are still eligible for U20.
It should be remembered that the senior Lady Jags created history by qualifying for the CONCACAF Gold Cup last October. An achievement for the first time by a Guyana Football team, male or female.
