Despite Guyana’s overwhelming success in regional junior Squash, the man who has been the chief architect behind all those accomplishments, Head Coach Carl Ince, somehow has managed to remain quite reserved.
Ince, who has been at the helm of the national squad since 1997 has racked up 11 overall titles during the 14-year span including 7 consecutive which is a phenomenal feat for any coach at any level.
During the hosting of the recently concluded CASA Junior Championships Ince sat down to speak with Kaieteur Sport following the team’s remarkable achievement where they completely dominated the region, capturing all three team titles including the Boys, Girls and Overall to go with the four individual titles.
Ince said he feels very privileged to be working with a group of talented and committed players, pointing out that no matter how good you are as a coach if you don’t have the right players to impart that knowledge it wouldn’t work.
He indicated that apart from the tremendous support that he has received throughout the years which was given from the top, referring to the different executives, assistant coaches, fitness trainers and senior players he is extremely grateful for the support that has been given by the parents. “Had it not been for those that I’ve mentioned, my job would certainly not been the same and perhaps the results different,” Ince felt.
He was also thankful to England Squash that allowed him access to their special training methods, which according to him, he and by extension Guyana continues to benefit from.
Asked to sum up this year’s performance, Ince referred to it as the best for sometime, adding that usually before the finals there used to be a lot of pressure, but this time around it was so different and far less.
“Previously I depended more on the final day of competition to guarantee whether we would win the overall title, but on this occasion it was a foregone conclusion heading into the final day,” he stated.
He said the difference this time was that they had started preparatory programme much earlier in addition to the fact that he is learning a little more each year.
“Obviously we felt that since the championships are being held here it should be special for us and we decided to prepare thoroughly and the rest is history,” Ince disclosed.
Commenting of the future, Ince revealed that some of the players will be going off to participate in the World Juniors and the Caribbean tournament was used as preparation for this event because they are cognizant that the standard there is much higher, but felt that Guyana deserves a chance to be there considering the team’s dominance of the regional circuit.
Ince said that even though a few of the players will be exiting the junior category, he still feels that because of the developmental programme that Guyana has started, the likelihood of us maintaining our dominance is strong.
“As long as we keep our focus and intensity with regards to our junior programme I se no reason why we should not continue to rule the regional circuit at this level (juniors),” Ince opined.
He made special mention of the input of the senior players, former champion Garfield Wiltshire, Robert Fernandes and the entire Squash fraternity for their support throughout his tenure.
