The curtains come down today in the inaugural Digicel Nationwide Schools Football Championship and fans could expect two enthralling encounters to climax the competition.
The matches which will be played at the GCC ground, Bourda will see arguably the two best teams in the month long tournament Christianburg / Wismar and Government Technical Institute (GTI) battle it out for the championship trophy and the right to go down in history as the first team to insert their name on the Lien Trophy up for grabs in what is undoubtedly the biggest schools tournament ever to be organised in this country.
The playoff for third place is between the much beloved Region 7 champions Waramadong and Region 6 title holders New Amsterdam Technical Institute and this matchup also have the hallmark of a championship game so fans are being urged to come to the arena on time to witness a double header that pits the cream of the country’s most promising junior footballers.
In the feature clash between Christianburg / Wismar and GTI, this game promises to be a scorching affair where the likes of Clarence Huggins, Trenton Lashley, goalkeeper Yannick Simmons, Omeion Wills and Travin Dryden will obviously have another opportunity to showcase their immense skills, while GTI’s captain Eon Alleyne, Jermaine Junor, Keifer Adams and Nkosie Barker will have a similar chance to impress the scouts.
It sets up to be an interesting encounter, but judging from the performances to date, the scale must be tilted in favour of the lads from the Mining Town, especially when one considers the opposition that they had to dispose of en route to the final.
GTI on the other hand seemed a bit lacklustre in their preliminary matches, but also possesses the pedigree of players that could hold their own against any team.
Junor has been the most prolific scorer in the tournament according to reports, while Alleyne has the experience from playing at a high level to torment the Lindeners.
However, Huggins pace and skill has been a wonder to watch throughout the competition and providing that they play as a team and move away from the individual mindset, their chances of wresting the crown in 2011 seems good.
The third place playoff is a hard one to predict a winner because on both paper and on-field, Waramadong seems a sure bet, but one will have to wait and see what impact their semi-final loss would have created.
They will no doubt be depending heavily on the performance of Tyson McNaughton, goalie Gerald Isaacs, Seon Ambrose and Alwin Francis to boost their chances, while NATI’s dependence for a win will be weighed heavily on the indomitable Devon James with support from Whitney LaRose and Leroy James.
The support from the fans throughout the competition has been phenomenal and once again it is anticipated that they will come out in their numbers to watch the cream of the country’s best young footballers at work.
Starting time is 16:00hrs.
It is expected that His Excellency President Bharrat Jagdeo, Minister of Sport Dr. Frank Anthony, Digicel’s CEO Gregory Dean, Head of Marketing Jacqueline James, Sponsorship and Events Manager Gavin Hope among others will be there to witness the two matches.
