But Jamaica claim Regional under-15 cricket title
Jamaica won the 2011 regional under-15 cricket two-day cricket title with a four-wicket victory over Barbados in the fifth and final round of the tournament yesterday at UTT’s ground in Trinidad as Guyana’s Tagnarine ‘Brandon’ Chanderpaul took the Man-of-the-Match with two half-centuries against the Windward Islands.
The left-handed Chanderpaul, son of West Indies Test batsman Shivnarine Chanderpaul, was robbed of a possible maiden century due to the strange 30-over first innings rule as Guyana reached 159-2 when their overs expired with Chanderpaul unbeaten on a solid 51.
Berbician Shimron Hetmyer, the brother of former Guyana under-19 batsman Seon Hetmyer, stroked 62 for the South Americans in their first innings as the 30-over restriction prevented most of the batsmen from batting in the final round of the rain ravaged tournament.
Chanderpaul, who many feel should have gained selection on Guyana’s under-19 team which faces the Leeward Islands tomorrow at Providence in the opening round of the West Indies three-day under-19 series, scored another fifty (58) in Guyana’s second innings, while Kemo Paul also made an even half-century as Guyana reached 254-7.
The Windward Islands were limited to 147-8 in their first innings as Roland Cato top scoring with 46. Malteenoes leg-spinner Steven Sankar grabbed 3-49 before returning to take 4-66 as Chad Phillip made 56 in the 199-8 made by the Islanders.
Guyana finished third on the points table with 31.5 points behind host Trinidad and Tobago (34.6) and champions Jamaica (40.1). Windward Islands (18.9), Barbados (14.3) and Leeward Islands (10.2) occupied the fourth, fifth and sixth positions respectively.
