Several weeks of pulsating football will come to a fitting climax when the Guyana Police Force FC (GPF) throws down the gauntlet on Fruta Conquerors FC (FCFC) when the final of the National Sports Commission/Georgetown Football Association futsal football competition concludes tonight at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall (CASH). The two finalists represent the best two teams of the competition after successfully engaging all comers in the preliminaries and knock out stages of the tournament. They will be battling for the championship trophy and the $500,000 at stake.
But even before these teams take to the court, the Beacons FC would face the Georgetown Football Club FC in the third place playoffs. The former team lost their semifinal encounter last Thursday night to the GPF 5-2, while the latter team suffered a similar fate to Conquerors 2-1.
The GPF would start out as the hot favourites following their systematic demolition of the GFC in that semifinal encounter. Their striking force, Darron Bentick, Rondell Arthur, Deon Rodney and Quame Alfred all teamed up to embarrass the GFC and if they continue in that vein tonight then the Fruta Conquerors would need more than orange juice to pull off the win.
The policemen are an organized unit and it was a wonder to behold as their frontline players weaved their way towards the opposition’s goal and converting with sweet timing and precision. Should the lawmen enter tonight’s game with a similar veracity then the GFC would have to dig real deep to pull off a victory.
The policemen would obviously come into tonight’s game with their four prong offensive attack but will have to be wary of such players as Odel Williams, who is in ripping form along with Lester Peters, Gerald Gritten and Delon Williams. Coach Sampson Gilbert is brimming with confidence and he feels that once his boys stick to the game plan they could cart off the honours. “We’ve been working on defensive and offensive organization and with such a formidable line up I will back my boys to win this tournament,” said Gilbert.
Those that witnessed the two weeks of action would readily admit to the gripping encounters. Tonight the crème de la crème would take to the field. With such big names and similar stakes it is anybody’s guess which team will crumble. Fans would just have to be there to witness the culmination of the rivalry.
The winner of the competition carts off $500,000 while the runners up net half that amount. The third place finishers win $150,000 while the final podium position will go home with $100,000. There are also several other incentives including highest goal scorer, best goalkeeper and most valuable player among others.
Several corporate entities have teamed up to ensure that the tournament is successfully staged and the organizers have relayed their heartfelt gratitude to these corporate entities. They are Banks DIH Ltd, Guyana Revenue Authority, Body Central, Med and Ron Express Shipping and Brokers and the National Sports Commission. Kick off time is 20:00hrs.
