The East Coast Zone of the GT&T FastBall knock-out football competition is nearing completion with three more teams strengthening their chances of being one of four teams that will advance to the round-of-32.
Playing the BV Community Centre Ground yesterday afternoon, B.V Lions tamed Buxton Tigers 5-0; blue ball goals scored by Akum Curry (14) and Trevon Pelvic. Ervin Fraser opened the scoring for the Lions in the first minute of the game.
Over at the Plaisance Ground, two exciting matches were the order of the afternoon.
The home team, Red Lions, knocked out Buxton Stars A side 1-0 on penalty kicks after the two sides played to a 1-1 tie at the end of regulation time.
John Heliger sent Red Lions into the lead with a powerfully struck goal converted from a rebound off a corner. The Lions were certainly the more dominant of the two sides and created quite a few chances but did not capitalize on the opportunities created.
Buxton Stars finally had something to shout about in the 25th minute (6 second penalty) and this was as a result of a throw in violation and they made no mistake with the chance, Keoma Sullivan converting.
With the captains having the right to choose the kickers for sudden death penalties on the opposing side, Red Lions made the moment count for them as Ken Garnette comfortably placed the ball way over the cross bar. Kingsley Bower ensured he sunk his shot to send his team into the next round.
The first game yesterday ended 1-0 in favour of Daddy’s Enterprise over Determinators A. With both sides playing tough ball but failing to make their many raids count in the attacking third, Daddy’s Enterprise it was that sprung the surprise after being on the defensive.
Their leading player, Les Charles Critchlow picked up the ball just around the half way line moved a few meters before deciding to take a long range shot that rebounded off the goalkeeper and into the path of Andrew McAulay who with a powerful right foot shot, rocked the back of the nets in the 25th minute.
Before the end of the first half though, Determinators muffed an opportunity to take the lead when they missed a 6 second penalty, a miss that came back to haunt them. Matches will continue on the Eats Coast on Monday.
