The Third Annual Scotia Bank/Berbice Cricket Board Academy is set to commence from August 22-28 at the Port Mourant Community Centre Ground and the Junior Selection Committee of the Board under the leadership of Leslie Solomon met recently to select 67 of the Ancient County’s top junior players from the Under-13 to Under-19 levels to be part of the Academy.
Chairman of the Special Events Committee Hilbert Foster announced recently that the Academy is being sponsored by Scotia Bank to the tune of $150 000.
The main aims of the Academy are to improve the player’s skills, promote the importance of being sports ambassadors and positive role models for Berbice and to increase their knowledge of the game and its rich tradition.
Foster said that the Academy would start at 08:30 hours and concluded at 13:00 hours, while players would receive snacks daily. Four Coaches will be in charge of the Technical aspect of the programme led by Berbice Cricket Board head coach Julian Moore.
The Board would also be organising several lectures during the Academy on topics ranging from the HIV/AIDS, Drug Abuse, Peer Pressure, Importance of Education, Importance of Discipline, Laws of Cricket, Physical Fitness and Captaincy.
Those selected to attend are being urged to take full advantage of the opportunities they are being offered. BCB President Keith Foster said they have and will be investing heavily in young cricketers as they are the future of the game and society.
