…promises to be bigger and better this year
The Fourth annual ‘Wakenaam Nite’ slated for July 30, promises to be bigger and better this year.
This year’s event is to be held at its usual venue, the Wakenaam Community Centre Ground, is expected to attract scores with a number of fun-filled activities for the entire family including a stage show featuring various artistes and an expo showcasing what the island has to offer.
Manniram Prashad, Minister of Tourism, Industry and Commerce, speaking at his South Road office in Georgetown, recalled that Wakenaam Nite started in 2008, by the Wakenaam Night Management Committee in collaboration with the Ministry of Tourism, Industry and Commerce.
Noting that it is a good example of public private partnership, he said that the group wanted to do something beneficial for the community and as such, after approaching the head of state for assistance, the Government bought the land for the community centre with the understanding that the committee would build a pavilion and develop the ground.
Wakenaam Nite became part of the fund raising activities, Prashad said, and lauded the Management committee for fulfilling that promise as “the pavilion is completed and serving the community”.
He said that this year’s Wakenaam Night which is part of the Ministry of Tourism calendar of events, expects to attract visitors from across Guyana as well as overseas-based Guyanese coming back home during this period.
He also reminded that persons will gather on the Hamburg Beach, Tiger Island just off Wakenaam Island, for the much-anticipated traditional August Monday activity.
Minister Prashad said that over the years, there have been a number of developments taking place on the island including the just completed airstrip.
Alluding to accommodation, the Minister said that they would be encouraging residents to have bed and breakfast arrangements. He disclosed that someone has expressed an interest in building a hotel on the island.
The Tourism Minister said that such events also help to showcase different parts of the country and bolster domestic tourism, and over the years Berbice Expo, Linden Expo, Rupununi Expo, Mahdia expo and Moruca Expo have been staged, and this year will be the second annual Building Expo.
Chairman of Wakenaam Night Management Committee, Sheik Ahmad, said that each year they strive to better the event and emphasis will be placed this year on showcasing and promoting the small businesses and attracting investors, through a larger exposition.
He thanked Minister Prashad and his Ministry for their continued support in ensuring the success of Wakenaam Night and even the Wakenaam Fowl Curry competition.
Treasurer of the Committee, Mustak Mohamed, said that proceeds from this year’s event will be used to do several community projects around the island including setting up various facilities for the youths in the area.
Wakenaam is an island of about 17.5 square miles, at the mouth of the Essequibo River, Region Three (Essequibo Islands /West Demerara). It was settled at one time by the Dutch in the 18th Century— the name Wakenaam is Dutch meaning “waiting for a name”.
