Campbell hammers unbeaten 151 as E’bo crash to 2nd massive defeat

Eighteen-year-old West Indies Female all-rounder Shemaine Campbell hit a commanding unbeaten 151 to spearhead Berbice to massive 248-run win against Essequibo yesterday at the DCC ground in the second round of the GCB senior Female Inter-county 50-overs cricket competition.
The slim right-hander, who plays for Rose Hall Town, played an array of audacious shots in her entertaining innings to register the competition’s second century and lead Berbice to 282-5 off their allotted 44 overs after a late start caused a reduction in the overs.
Campbell struck 11 fours and three effortless sixes in her 118-ball innings and shared in a 207-run fifth wicket partnership with left-hander Trishanie Cort who made 65 as once again the under-prepared Essequibo bowling was exposed in sultry conditions a day after June Ogle-Thomas scored 131 not out against them.
Essequibo were bowled out for a record low 10 by Demerara at Bourda on Thursday. Yesterday there was no sign of a fairy godmother coming to their rescue as they were bundled out for 34 in 18.4 overs on a slow pitch as six of their batters made ducks. Skipper Sheneigh Calvin top-scored with seven in another embarrassing batting display.
Thirteen-year-old Off-spinner Phaffiana Millington bowled with encouraging flight and extracted turn to finish with 3-6 from four overs and got support from the West Indies female pace-trio of Sabrina Munroe (2-6), Erva Giddings (1-15) and Tremayne Smartt (1-5) as Essequibo slumped from 21-2 to lose their last eight wickets for 13 runs.
Munroe, the Demerara-based fast bowler, struck twice in quick succession by removing the only two players with National experience in the Essequibo side to leave the score 17-2. She had Kumari Persaud (2) lbw and bowled Waheeda Bacchus (0) and when the burly Calvan (7) was lbw to Giddings at 21-3 it was the beginning of the end for the Essequibo lasses.
Malini Jaikarran finished unbeaten on six as 16 Extras helped the Essequibo cause.
Earlier, Berbice, with four West Indies players in their side, recovered from 5-2 after the loss of Jacqueline Singh (1) and Melanie Henry (0) as Campbell and Katana Mentore took the score to 53 before Mentore (14) was run out.
When Smartt (2) was also run out at 64-4 Essequibo still had hopes of limiting Berbice to a ‘gettable’ score but once the free-flowing Campbell and Cort joined forces with positive batting, Berbice, who benefited from 42 wides, took control against a team which looked tired from their back-to back matches and the result was never in question.
After a rest today Berbice and Demerara will face-off at the Police ground tomorrow in the championship match and an intriguing contest is anticipated.
