Giant killers Christianburg/Wismar will have another opportunity to eliminate another team from the hinterland community when they meet the last standing opposition Waramadong in one of two semi-finals of the Digicel-sponsored Nationwide Schools Football Tournament which will be played today, at the GCC Ground, Bourda.
The team from the Bauxite Mining Town has been a thorn in the flesh for teams coming from the rural communities, having disposed of Kwakwani, St. Ignatius and Port Kaituma en route to their place in the last four, but today’s opponent is of a much higher pedigree and fans could anticipate a bruising and exciting encounter as both teams battle for a place in the championship game slated for Sunday at the same venue.
Once again the onus will be on the likes of Trenton Lashley, Clarence Huggins and goalkeeper Yannick Simmons to ensure victory, while Waramadong, which has really lit up the tournament with their samba-style play, will be depending on the services of the prolific Tyson McNaughton and Roddick Williams to lead their charge for a place in the final.
The Region 7 champions have looked potent every time they attack, while the defence has been consistent and sturdy and it would take some great offensive raids from Christianburg/Wismar to penetrate the usually airtight backline.
The Region 10 champions have had the advantage of home court for sometime now and fans and scouts alike will now have a real good opportunity to see what they are made of playing away from home on conditions conducive for a good display of football, a far cry from the wet conditions they seemed to relish back home.
In the other semi-final, GTI despite a lacklustre build up have the players to beat anyone of the remaining teams on their day, but New Amsterdam Technical Institute, though, somewhat underrated cannot be taken lightly, especially with the speedy Devon James, who have scored nine goals in their last two games in ripping form presently.
GTI have a few players who’ve made the national junior team and their quest for victory will be led by Jermaine Junior, Ian Alleyne and Keifer Adams.
James certainly possesses the speed and silky skills to worry any defence and GTI’s will be severely tested, perhaps, for the first time in the competition. He will have as support the likes of Whitney LaRose another consistent performer and Leroy James.
Fans could expect two riveting contests and are being urged to come out and have a firsthand glimpse at some of the game’s future stars. Kick off time is 15:30 hrs.
