There is no constitution in the world that prevents a citizen from publicly stating if he/she believes an account of any story or situation or incident or explanation by the Head of State.
It is the right enshrined in natural law for citizens to declare their beliefs in accordance with the laws of libel and/or treason.
No one can arrest you if you say that is it your belief that women are inferior to men. It is not a scientific fact. It is a moral outrage to say it, but you have the right to say it if you want to. You are entitled to your belief if you saw on television or heard President Jagdeo’s account of the crime wave between 2002 and 2005.
It is your right to publicly state that you do not accept the President’s explanation on his Government’s role in the collapse of Clico. No one can or should crucify for your position in this regard. President Jagdeo’s pronouncement that he never had a discussion with Swami Aksharanand on taking a Christian programme off the air as implied by Tony Vieira should be left to each citizen to decide whom they believe – Vieira or the President.
What is unacceptable in this country, and all stakeholders should find it dangerous, is the President’s attitude in relation to an opinion by Tony Vieira that it suggested that there (is) was a conflict between Pentecostals and Catholics.
According to Jagdeo, by saying this, Vieira has sought to engender discord among denominations in the Christian community and was therefore “reprehensible” to the Constitution. This is nonsense and Guyanese must tell Mr. Jagdeo it is nonsense. But it is far more dangerous than nonsensical.
Mr. Jagdeo’s position on Vieira’s opinion is totalitarianistic thinking. The first set of people that must condemn Jagdeo’s unenlightened stance is the Bar Association. What Mr. Jagdeo has done is to invest himself with philosophical invincibility.
As far as I know, Mr Jagdeo has no official training in philosophy. I don’t know if he did a course in such at Patrice Lumumba University where he studied in the then USSR and if he did, it would have been compulsory reading on Marxist-Leninist texts. Lenin was very poor in understanding Marx and hated Hegel and Kant.
It means Mr. Jagdeo has become the world’s authority on epistemology and deconstruction. Mr. Jagdeo decides which statement is likely to cause social instability, political disruption and constitutional uneasiness. We have entered a new phase in fascism. So no preacher in this country has the right to tell Guyanese of his/her belief that the world is going to end in October.
By saying so, you are likely to cause massive social upheavals. Guyanese wanting to enjoy their last few months on earth may raid the banks, rape other human beings and go on gay (in the Parisian sense of the word) abandonment.
An American preacher has said that the world was coming to an end in May. There were a few suicides, but the American Government has not arrested him. What for? If you are stupid enough to believe him and take your life then why should the police arrest the preacher?
This same religious fanatic has now moved the date to October this year. Is President Jagdeo serious and should he be taken seriously when he told a press conference last Friday that when Tony Vieira opined that there is a conflict between the Pentecostals and the Catholics, that he made a statement repugnant to the Constitution?
If Mr. Jagdeo means what he exclaimed at that press meeting then a lot of opposition politicians are going to get charged for treason. We may not have the election at all, because all of the candidates from APNU and AFC and Benschop’s Independent Party will end up in jail, based on the things that come out of their mouth.
So Kean Gibson will not be allowed into Guyana. She maintains that the state in Guyana discriminates against African Guyanese. Is that judgement repugnant to the Constitution? Other politicians believe that state money is funding Mr. Ramotar’s campaign. That observation is likely to cause social unrest.
Actually, I have been engaged in some research for two years now and have not been able to do a column on what I learnt. But there seems to be evidence to support the thesis that the true understanding of what Christianity is can only be found in Catholicism. I hope that opinion will not cause a religious war in Guyana.
Finally, I believe the world will end before Guyana has its general elections in 2011.
