Murder accused freed

Charles Rawlins was yesterday freed of a murder charge at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court. The matter was being heard before Magistrate Geeta Chandan-Edmond.
Rawlins on March 1, 2010, was accused of killing his reputed wife, Okema Todd.
The accused who had evaded police for eight months was remanded to prison on his initial court appearance.
Rawlins was represented by Attorney at Law Patrice Henry who had made a no-case submission which was upheld yesterday. The Magistrate assessed the evidence and it was determined that a prima facie case had not been established. Hence, the trial was brought to an end and the accused was set free.
The prosecution in presenting the facts of the case on Rawlins’ initial court appearance had stated that on March 1, 2010, the accused, armed with a kitchen knife, dealt several stabs to Okema Todd which resulted in her death.
The evidence the prosecution had put forward in order to prove their case was the oral confession made by the accused when the allegation was put to him; the post mortem report which was consistent with the oral confession; and the demeanor of the accused during the PI when the prosecution’s witnesses were testifying.
Sixteen witnesses testified.
