The prison officer who had narcotics in his possession and was responsible for taking cigarettes into the prison, yesterday pleaded not guilty to the offence and was subsequently granted bail in the sum of $50,000.
Quacy Collins, 25, appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court to answer of having in his possession 13 grams of cannabis and taking into the prison a prohibited item without lawful authority.
The court heard that the defendant is a prison officer and due to an operation that was being carried out at the prison a search was conducted on Collin’s person where the items were discovered. He was then cautioned, arrested and charged with the offence.
Collins who has been employed as a prison officer for just five months was represent by Attorney at law George Thomas who told the court that it would be ludicrous for Collins to be remanded to prison and dwell among the inmates that he was in charge of a week ago, with that being said Thomas asked that bail be granted in a reasonable sum for his client. Collins is expected to make his next court appearance on October 24.
