– Guyana to depart on chartered flight
By Edison Jefford
The Government of Guyana through the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports and Venezuela through the Venezuelan Ambassador to Guyana, Dario Morandy, has alleviated concerns over Guyana’s participation at the ALBA Games in Venezuela.
Kaieteur Sport understands that Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport, Dr. Frank Anthony and Morandy were instrumental in brokering a deal that will result in Guyana’s contingent travelling to Venezuela for the July 17-30 Games on a chartered flight.
The Games of the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America (ALBA) in Venezuela is expected to field very strong teams from South America. It is a multi-discipline event and some quarters had expressed concern over an earlier travel arrangement.
The overland route from Georgetown to Lethem-Lethem to Brazil and Brazil to Venezuela over a period of 72 hours was a concern of the Athletics Association of Guyana. However, Anthony and his team mitigated in the issue and it was resolved speedily.
A source told Kaieteur Sport that the ministry was not too happy with some of the revelations of the article that appeared earlier this week. The source said that the timing of the article was early since deliberations over travel arrangements were ongoing.
This newspaper understands that Morandy had promised such support from the inception based on the fact that Venezuela is assisting other countries such as Cuba with air transportation. The overland route was, apparently, an alternative that ripened.
Anthony’s team, which included Director of Sport, Neil Kumar and Permanent Secretary within the Ministry, Alfred King, were among some of the ministry officials that met at the Committee Meeting yesterday morning to deliberate on the arrangements.
Apart from the overland journey, which the athletic association argued was too much fatigue for its athletes before they compete, the per diem for athletes, which the respective associations must bear, was also a concern with the association saying that it cannot afford it.
However, this newspaper understands that Kumar was instrumental in resolving some issues as it relates to the per diem problem. The source told this writer that Kumar worked behind the scenes to ensure that the athletes leave with their stipends.
