– GTI, NATI and Waramadong follow suit
By Rawle Welch
Christianburg / Wismar Secondary continued their fairy tale run in the Digicel-sponsored Nationwide Schools Football Competition when they sent another team from the hinterland community packing after defeating Port Kaituma 1-0 through a 31st minute strike from Trenton Lashley in soggy conditions yesterday, at the Mackenzie Sports Club ground.
The result means that they’ve now moved into the semi-finals where they will meet another team from the hinterland community Waramadong on Friday, at the famous GCC ground, Bourda.
By now known as the giant killers of teams coming from the rural areas, Christianburg / Wismar first disposed of Kwakwani, before sending the highly touted St. Ignatius team to an early ‘Summer’ break and latest casualty Port Kaituma and must start as favourites against another formidable opponent Waramadong for a place in the final on Sunday.
The team from the mining town, though, enjoying home advantage for most of their games possesses the skills and ability to go all the way and any opponent underestimating them will do so at their own peril.
In the encounter against Port Kaituma another team that came into the match with a high reputation, the hosts who always seem to enjoy the wet conditions were put on the defensive early with Port Kaituma strikers in attack mode, but a well composed backline kept the visitors in check.
The game seemed even up to midway of the opening period, before Christianburg / Wismar begun to string together a few passes on the difficult surface and clearly read the conditions better.
They took the lead when the alert Lashley looked up and saw Port Kaituma’s goalkeeper Angel Flores way off his line and wonderfully executed chip floated painfully into the back of the net with the later scrambling in vain to stop.
They should have increased their lead shortly after, but Clarence Huggins powerful header sailed agonizingly inches outside the right upright.
No more goals were scored in the period.
In the second half, Port Kaituma’s best chance came when a shot from about 30 yards out eluded an advancing Yannick Simmons stationed between the uprights, but full back Travin Dryden saw the danger and stretched full length to clear the ball off the goal line into touch for a corner.
It was a lucky escape for the hosts since no team managed to score after then and final whistle sounded to evoke wild celebrations among the Christianburg / Wismar players and their supporters.
Port Kaituma as has been the case throughout the competition brought their band of supporters who were left disappointed with the result.
Digicel’s representatives Sherwin Osbourne and Azam Alli congratulated both teams for a well played match.
Alli urged Port Kaituma to return next year better prepared, adding that they are a young team with loads of talent that could once gain do well in the competition.
He then wished Christianburg / Wismar the best of luck for the remainder of the tournament.
In other results:
Waramadong beat Charity 4-1 with Tyson McNaughton netting a treble in the 10th, 58th and 60th minutes, while Roddick Williams scored the other in the 11th minute.
