Investigators are yet to ascertain the identity of the owner for the burnt out trawler ‘Atlantic Star’ that was found ablaze in the Essequibo River on Tuesday night.
Kaieteur News was told that investigators from MARITIME had visited the burnt out vessel yesterday and were investigating the cause of the fire.
This newspaper was told that the owner for the vessel had not been located, up to late last night. Sources close to the investigation said that the owner was a businessman from Georgetown.
When Kaieteur News arrived at the Parika foreshore where the boat is moored, investigators were still on the vessel.
A group of fishermen who helped bring the vessel back to shore, told Kaieteur News that they first heard about the incident around 17:00hrs.
Two of the men Roopnarine Doobay and Roopesh Kumar, told Kaieteur News that they heard of the fire at around 5:30.
However they said that they were unable to go immediately since there was a high tide.
They eventually left around 19:00hrs and ventured out to sea. After about an hour of searching the men said they observed a vessel on fire in the vicinity of “Blue Jacket” in the Essequibo River.
The men said they managed to put out the blaze and went onboard the vessel.
Kaieteur News was told that after they went aboard the vessel none of the crewmembers were there. It is unclear which vessel brought the men ashore.
Unconfirmed reports have suggested that the vessel might have been smuggling fuel.
The sailors from the trawler were taken ashore at Meten-Meer-Zorg. The police are yet to locate the three men.
