Guyana’s latest West Indies cricketer Chris Barnwell stroked the only century in the three-day practice match between the National under-19s and a Rest side which ended in a draw at Everest yesterday.
The Guyana team was without Skipper Ronsford Beaton and Amir Khan who are representing the West Indies under-19s in a four-match limited overs series Florida. The first-class pair is expected to return to join the rest of the team this weekend.
The Guyanese face the Leeward Islands at Providence on Monday in their opening game of this year’s Regional under-19 tournament and are hunting their first title at this level since 2008 in St Kitts.
Barnwell, who made his West Indies debut in the t20 Digicel home series, stroked six fours and four sixes in 106 and got support from First-Class opener Shemroy Barrington (65), Kellon Carmichael (49*) and West Indies ODI player Leon Johnson (37) as the Johnson-led Rest team declared at 285-6. Left-arm spinner Gudakesh Motie grabbed 3-55 for the National Colts who were dismissed for 182 just before Lunch yesterday after resuming on their overnight 135-5.
Essequibian Kevon Boodie continued his good form to follow up his half-century from the one-day practice match with 75 but only Chanderpaul Hemraj (40), Jomal LaFluer (21) and Linden Austin (14) of the other batsmen reached double figures for the teenagers.
Left-arm unorthodox spinner Totaram Bishun had five wickets and left-arm swing bowler Andre Stoll supported with three for the Rest team who declared for the second time in the match at Tea yesterday.
Their second innings 179-6 was built around 50 from Johnson, 28 from Trevon Griffith, 27 from Barrington, 24 from Jaron Byron, 21 from Randy Lindore and 17 from Barnwell.
Motie gain bowled well with 4-43 while LaFluer had 2-49 for the National under 19s who, set 283 to win, reached 78-3 when stumps were drawn.
Boodie began with all guns blazing and his first 26 runs came in boundaries before he was bowled by Seon Daniels for 32 with five fours and a six at 42-1. Three runs later Dominique Rikhi (1) was bowled behind his back by Stoll, while West Indies under-19 left-hander Kwame Crosse, who led the Guyana youth side, was bowled sweeping at off-spinner Randy Lindore at which time the game was called off.
The Guyana players were scheduled to return to the respective homes last evening and are expected back in the City on Sunday.
