The man accused of beating a senior citizen with a hammer, was yesterday remanded on a charge of attempted murder. He was not required to plea to the indictavle charge.
When the accused, 34-year-old Colwyn Mc Koy, appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court, he was told that the police are stating that on July 9 he unlawfully wounded 80-year-old Melville Thorne with the intent to commit murder.
Police Prosecutor Venetta Pindar told the court that Mc Koy and Thorne are known to each other and that the defendant would usually visit the complainant’s home.
Pindar stated that on the day in question, during one of those visits, the two men had an altercation. As a result, Mc Koy picked up a hammer and hit Thorne several times to the head.
The court heard that the accused was seen running from Thorne’s home after which Thorne was found in a state of unconsciousness. The victim was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital where he was admitted.
The matter was reported to the police station and the accused was subsequently arrested and charged with the offence.
The Prosecution objected to bail citing the seriousness of the offence.
The next court date for the matter was set for July 22.
