The July edition of the Friday Night Fights has boiled down to a Guyana versus Barbados affair after St Lucian, Joseph Christopher, initially scheduled to fight Anthony Augustin, has indicated that he is unable to keep his ring date after experiencing some difficulties in his homeland. The two were supposed to clash in a 4 rounds showdown on this month end’s Friday night fights scheduled for the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall (CASH) on Friday July 29 next.
The burly Guyanese will now match gloves with Barbadian Julian Tanif after feverish efforts by the organizers to find a suitable replacement bore fruit. Otherwise, the remaining fights remain intact and Cassius Matthews will attempt to avenge the losses suffered by his countrymen, Mark Austin and Shawn Pyle to Barbadian, Miguel Antoine when he tackles him in a 4 rounds scrap. Also on the card, Orland ‘Pocket Rocket’ Rogers matches gloves with Barbadian Selwyn Lett, while Joel McRae and Edmond DeClou will face off in an all Guyanese middleweight affair.
The local boxers have already opened camp at various gyms countrywide. DeClou trains out of the Young Lions Boxing Gym, Wismar Linden while Rogers is honing his skill at the Pocket Rocket Boxing gym in Berbice. Augustin is whipping himself into shape at the Andrew ‘Sixhead’ Lewis Boxing Gym, Albouystown while McRae is also in Albouystown but at the Forgotten Youth Foundation Boxing Gym. Kaieteur Sport will continue to monitor their sessions to report on the developments.
The ProAm affair is a Guyana Boxing Board of Control initiative in collaboration with the Guyana Amateur Boxing Association (GABA), the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports and the National Communication Network.
Those unable to visit the venue can tune in to National Communication Network for a live broadcast while the price of admission remains at $1000 and $500 for adults and children respectively.
