The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Sub-Regional Office for the Caribbean is working to increase its involvement in fisheries in the Caribbean and be more responsive to the needs of the industry through the appointment of a new Fishery and Aquaculture Officer.
The new officer, Dr. Raymon van Anrooy, also assumes the functions of the Secretary of the Western Central Atlantic Fishery Commission (WECAFC) and will provide follow-up for specific FAO fisheries and aquaculture related activities in the region, together with colleagues and partners.
Dr. van Anrooy, a Dutch national, started his career in Nicaragua in an artisanal fisheries project on the Caribbean coast in 1998. He has been working for FAO since 2000, based in Vietnam, Italy and Turkey. In his last post (2007–2011) he was Sub-Regional Fishery and Aquaculture Officer for Central Asia and Secretary of the Central Asian and Caucasus Regional Fisheries and Aquaculture Commission.
His main areas of expertise include fisheries and aquaculture policy development and management, fisheries and aquaculture economics, and emergency assistance. Dr. van Anrooy holds a PhD in fish marketing and an MSc in rural development economics with specialisations in aquaculture/fisheries and marketing.
FAO Sub-Regional Coordinator, Mrs. Florita Kentish, in noting the significance of Dr. van Anrooy’s appointment said, “With the arrival of our new Fishery and Aquaculture Officer, the FAO Sub-regional Office will be building on existing partnerships and developing new ones with national and regional institutions active in fisheries and aquaculture. Dr. van Anrooy brings considerable expertise to this role and we eagerly anticipate sustainable outputs on all levels.”
