Dear Editor,
More and more persons are now coming out of the woodwork and exposing the state of the administration of cricket in Berbice. Mr. Rishee Thakur’s letter that followed mine was most revealing since it displayed the undemocratic nature of the Board in excluding such a large sub-association, Upper Corentyne, from participating in the last AGM of the Berbice Board whilst they continue to tolerate defunct Clubs in order to pad up the votes.
I have in my possession a copy of the Rules of the Berbice Board dated December 1991 and signed by its President at the time, Leslie Amsterdam, which constitution was approved at a Special General Meeting following a motion moved by Sam Suchit and seconded by Frederick Beera.
Based on my investigations, this is the document that supposedly governs cricket administration in Berbice. However, there is another document titled”Draft Constitution” which has never been passed by the Board but has been used interchangeably by this Executive whenever it suits their purposes.
Quoting from this 1991 document, there is the following objective: ‘THE OBJECT OF THE BOARD IS TO PROMOTE, CONTROL AND REGULATE THE GAME OF CRICKET IN BERBICE AND TO COOPERATE WITH THE GUYANA BOARD IN PROMOTING THE GAME OF CRICKET IN GUYANA AND THE WEST INDIES GENERALLY’.
I wonder how this very noble objective reconciles with the decision of the Executive Committee not to attend the AGM of the Guyana Cricket Board. Before questioning the legality of this decision by the Executive Committee, I would like the Board to expound on the powers and authority of the Executive Committee towards making such a huge decision for the entire Berbice County without summoning a General Membership meeting.
Surely, the Executive cannot and should not usurp the power and authority of the general membership on such an important decision. I do note that the Essequibo Board has also joined the fray in calling out its counterpart.
As such, I urge the Berbice Board to exercise better judgment and attend this important AGM as that is the highest decision-making forum for the GCB and they would be shirking their elected responsibilities and flouting their rules and constitution by their non-attendance.
