Warren ‘Forty’ Mc Kay returned to winnings ways Sunday in the Ancient County of Berbice when he pedaled to a fantastic win in the Annual Ballot Box Martyrs 55-mile road race in a 10 man sprint to the finish line at the famous No. 63 Village.
Mc Kay, who has been struggling for form recently, upstaged his fierce rivals to win the contest in 2 Hours 14 Minutes 03 Seconds. The inform Alonzo Greaves and Robin Persaud had to settle for the 2nd and 3rd place with Junior Niles, Neil Reece and last year’s champion Albert Philander closing out the top six in that order.
Berbician Reece while placing 5th overall successfully maintained his grip on the junior title, Paul De Nobrega and the ever improving Raul Leal taking 2nd and 3rd.
After the riders were sent on their way from Freedom House in New Amsterdam, Mc Kay (3 primes), Eric Sankar (1 prime) and Enzo Matthews (2 prime) broke away from the main pack but Sankar was dropped on the upward journey at Adventure. Mc Kay and Matthews were sucked in by the main bunch on the upward journey also at No. 63 Village where they maintained connection up to the turn back point at the Corriverton Police Station up until a few hundred yards from the finish line, which saw 10 riders in pursuit of the top positions, Mc Kay prevailing in the end.
The lone female rider was Berbician Marica Dick. Richard ‘Nightmare’ Charles was the winner of the upright contest ahead of James Mentore and Shawn Frank in that order.
Seebourne Fernandes topped the veteran category, Esau Isaacs and Linden Burrows followed Fernandes to the line in that order.
Walter Isaacs copped the trophy for the first over-60 rider to finish the race.
Minister of Culture Youth and Sport Dr. Frank Anthony, Navin Chanderpal and Director of Sports Neil Kumar were among the officials who delivered remarks and assisted with the presentation of prizes in the Hassan Mohamed organised event.
Meanwhile, Traffic Chief in Berbice, Kevin Adonis and overseas based Lloyd Roberts made presentations to Neil Reece for his outstanding showing in recent weeks.
