Created out of the need to provide alternative accommodation for street vendors, the New Stelling View Mall is expected to benefit 60 vendors.
The facility is scheduled to be fully operational by July month-end, says Schulder Griffith, Clerk of Markets.
According to Griffith, vendors who are utilizing the eastern section of the Stabroek Market would be relocated to the new facility.
In addition, private developers who helped to make this public-private partnership a success would have vending access to the facility.
He noted that the Mayor and City Council did not make any financial contribution towards the project but thus far about $60M was expended.
The vendors are excited about this initiative and are grateful to the Municipality, the Ministries of Local Government and Regional Development, and Public Works and Communications.
The New Stelling View Mall is located within the vicinity of the Georgetown Ferry Stelling and the Ministry of Labour, Human Services and Social Security.
Griffith stressed that the fenced establishment is expected to be a safe shopping environment with security services coming from the City Constabulary and private security in an arrangement that was made by vendors.
The complex was designed to facilitate orderly vending and shopping in a clean, healthy and comfortable environment. In addition to the usual sale of clothing, food items, and art and craft, beautician services would be available.
Griffith posited that the snackettes, which were once demolished owing to their shabby conditions, were resuscitated. Food vendors have already commenced business and the environment has improved tremendously.
