An elderly man is nursing head injuries after being the victim of a brutal hammer attack at his Lot 33 Durban Street Lodge apartment.
Eighty-year-old Neville Thorne was allegedly cornered in his flat at around 14:00 hrs on Saturday and repeatedly struck with a hammer by a young man who is a regular visitor to the premises.
Residents found the pensioner lying in a pool of blood in his living room and rushed him to the Georgetown Hospital.
The alleged attacker was detained by police after he returned with a relative to the scene.
The motive for the attack is unclear although one report suggests that some money was stolen from the victim.
A neighbour told Kaieteur News that she was in her yard on Saturday afternoon when she observed a young man heading for the apartment that Thorne lives in. The woman said that the youth entered Thorne’s front door.
Shortly after, the woman said she heard someone in Thorne’s apartment shouting “Oh God, Oh God, is just suh?”
“I come outside and I hear the landlady (who lives in the top flat) say ‘what going on?’
“Then her husband come downstairs to the door and ask what going on, and a voice (in Thorne’s apartment) say ‘wha happen, people can’t drink and have a nice time’?”
The suspicious neighbour then peered through an open bedroom window but saw no sign of Mr. Thorne.
Eventually, the youth who had visited the pensioner came outside. The woman recalled that the suspect ‘barely opened the door’, so she was unable to see inside the apartment.
She also recalled that the suspect placed a hand in one of his pockets and then departed.
The woman said that she then entered Thorne’s apartment where she found him lying in a corner of the living room and bleeding profusely from the head. A blood-stained hammer was in a nearby chair.
“I say ‘what happen to you?’ and he say Kerwyn lash him in his head with a hammer.”
The resident said that she contacted the police.
The woman said that the suspect returned with his mother shortly after the police had arrived.
According to her, the woman alleged that Mr. Thorne had struck her son with a hammer. Police then took the suspect into custody.
