DEAR EDITOR,
I wonder if the suffering of poor Guyanese will ever end. Surely, this will not happen under the PPP government. The Jagans died and so did the PPP; greed, corruption, nepotism, and victimization are the hallmarks of the Jagdeo administration.
The poor are forced to pay heavy taxes such as VAT, while Jagdeo, his Ministers and their families, the breaucracy and others enjoy duty free concessions. Some of them do not even buy food.
The poor man pays through his nose and live on a day-to-day basis. The cost of food, transportation, and other necessities prevent the children of the poor from having a proper education, thereby preventing them from having good jobs. Most poor people do not own their own houses and those who own do not enjoy proper living conditions.
Georgetown and New Amsterdam are overcrowded with the homeless, while Jagdeo and his cronies own several houses that are unoccupied. The poor man is harassed daily by the police. Mini bus drivers are forced to pay the police a daily fee to be left unmolested.
The produce of farmers is forcibly taken away by the police on their way to the market. People who apply for Driver’s licenses, and who take the course, often fail. However, those who pay the Certifying Officers get their license. This leads to the chaotic situation on the road. The poor man has to pay for everything.
The poor, the masses of the Guyanese society make up the majority – about 75 % – of the electorate. These are the people whose vote can bring about the betterment of their own lives.
They have the power to elect a President and Members of the Parliament of their own choice.
They are the gun with one bullet – The vote – that can bring change to their state of existence. Voting should be focused not on race but a better way of life, free of greed and corruption. Racial unity of the masses is the only way forward.
Guyana is an animal farm where Napoleon and his dogs are accountable to no one. They reign supreme. Criticism is not tolerated. Big Brother is always watching. Ask ‘Yellow Man’. What will happen if you place a piranah in a gold fish aquarium? From recent reports, emanating from Guyana, there has been an increased in the rat population.
And there has been a demand for more cheese, both domestic and foreign. The delay of the Norwegian government to release a shipment of cheese is causing many problems. There appears to be a revolution in the rat community.
The masses of the Guyanese society have been treated as children who receive toys and goodies at Christmas. Politicians will give handouts at election time, play the race card, and make all sorts of promises to get their votes.
The gun and the silver bullet – The man and his vote – are most important. The man should use his vote to elect proper leaders, who are God-fearing and competent. Good leaders will bring about change for all.
